Optic Fusion - Company Profile Number OneWhen I visited downtown Tacoma around 2000 I was looking to create a hosted application location for a company called Lariat Software. I was hoping to establish it here so that I could eventually transition to running it, allowing me to work near where I lived. There were a number of software and technology companies downtown at the time... Data Center goes green!Optic Fusion Inc., Tacoma's only Colocation Data Center and Internet hub, has teamed up with Tacoma Power to use Green Power. Optic Fusion will power its office, customers servers and equipment with wind power dedicated to them through use of the wind power project in the middle Columbia River region. Optic Fusion will receive dedicated power of at least 1667 kilowatt hours from wind generation. Rick Shanaman Optic Fusion's CEO said “We believe it is very important for the IT industry to look at how much power they use for powering the internet and cooling internet infrastructure and do our part to consume green power when available.” He continued, “Sure, this kind of power is a little bit more expensive, but we feel it is an important issue we should support.” Traditionally colocation centers across the country consume mass amounts of energy to run computers and servers for many customers including local and national firms, financial service companies, government agencies, and web hosting businesses. Optic Fusion worked with Tacoma power under the city's Evergreen Options Program to achieve this goal. The program is open to other Tacoma business concerned about the environment.
